Certain changes in your life may provide you with the opportunity to update your benefits coverage. Use this content to guide you about certain life events and the steps you may need to take.
Marriage or Domestic Partnership
If you get married or enter into a domestic partnership for six months or more, you can enroll your spouse or domestic partner in certain benefits coverage.
Do they need benefits coverage?
Spouses and domestic partners can be added to your medical, dental and vision coverage. You only have 30 days following the date of your event (marriage or official domestic partner status) to enroll them in these benefits.
Be ready to show documentation.
If you want to add your spouse or domestic partner to your medical, dental and vision benefits, you will need to provide proper documentation, such as a marriage certificate or supporting documents for a domestic partnership.
Take action within 30 days.
Depending on how you originally enrolled, you’ll either log in to PlanSource (most campuses) or enroll your spouse or domestic partner through your Graduate Medical Education office (UCI campus).
Growing Your Family
Whether you’re having or adopting a child, you can enroll them in certain benefits coverage within 30 days of their birth or finalized adoption.
Do they need benefits coverage?
Children can be added to your medical, dental and vision coverage within 30 days of their birth or finalized adoption.
Be ready to show documentation.
To complete enrollment, you’ll need to provide the proper documentation for your child, such as a birth certificate or adoption documents. Connect with your GME office for details.

Depending on how you originally enrolled, you’ll either log in to PlanSource (most campuses) to enroll your child or contact your Graduate Medical Education office (UCI campus) to complete their enrollment.
Leaving UC
Whether you’ve finished your residency or clinical fellowship or you are leaving the program early, you should know your options and the impact to your benefits.
Do you need benefits coverage to continue?
If you will not be covered through parents or a spouse/domestic partner, you may want to think about COBRA coverage, which extends certain benefits coverage.
Take your life and disability coverage with you.
You can convert your life and disability insurance into an individual policy and take it with you when you leave UC. However, the coverage is different and you have to act quickly.
Retirement benefits require action from you.
If you participated in a defined contribution plan for safe harbor residents during your residency, you need to connect with your Graduate Medical Education office to take any necessary steps.
Do I need to submit claims for reimbursement?
If you participated in the Carrot plan, you have 30 days following your termination date to submit eligible claims for reimbursement. No reimbursements will be made for expenses incurred after you leave UC.
