Disability Insurance
What to Know
Time away from work for a pregnancy or unexpected illness or injury could mean months without a paycheck. Disability insurance replaces a portion of your income to help maintain your standard of living if you’re unable to work. Both plans are administered by New York Life Insurance Company.
Short-Term Disability
You’re automatically enrolled in Short-Term Disability (STD) benefits at no cost to you. STD benefits kick in if you can’t work for 30 continuous days because of a disability, including pregnancy.
STD benefits may pay up to 66.67% of your salary ($1,200 weekly maximum) for up to 22 weeks.
New York Life is responsible for reviewing claims [PDF] and determining eligibility for benefits.
Long-Term Disability
You’re automatically enrolled in Long-Term Disability (LTD) benefits at no cost to you.
The STD benefits kick in first if you can’t work for 30 continuous days because of a disability, including pregnancy, and cover a portion of your salary for up to 22 weeks.
If you are still disabled after 22 weeks, LTD benefits kick in. LTD benefits replace up to 66.67% of your salary ($5,000 monthly maximum) until you no longer meet the definition of disabled or you reach Social Security normal retirement age.
New York Life is responsible for reviewing claims [PDF] and determining eligibility for benefits.
