How to Enroll
What to Know
As a new resident or fellow, or if you have not previously elected benefits, you must take action if you want to enroll in medical, dental, vision and behavioral health coverage or in a flexible spending account. If your program start date is prior to July 1, you will need to enroll twice: once for the current plan year ending on June 30, and once for the new plan year beginning July 1. If you’re enrolling through PlanSource, you’ll be prompted to do this when you enroll.
New Residents and Fellows
You have 30 days from your program start date to enroll in medical, dental and vision coverage and in a flexible spending account.
Your coverage begins retroactively to your program start date.
All UC Campuses Except UC Irvine
To enroll:
- Log in to PlanSource.
- Your temporary username is the first letter of your first name + the first 6 letters of your last name + the last 4 digits of your Social Security number. Example: Username for John Hancock (Social Security number is 123-45-6789) is: jhancoc6789. Your password is your birthdate (YYYYMMDD). You’ll be prompted to change your temporary login and password following your initial login.
- Enroll yourself and dependent(s) for coverage, add dependents, and update your address and beneficiaries.
- UC San Francisco, UC San Diego and UC Riverside only: If you enroll in Anthem’s HMO plan, you must choose a primary care physician (PCP) during your initial enrollment period. If you do not select a PCP, one will be assigned to you. You can change your PCP at any time through Anthem.
- Confirm your mailing address and your preferred email address. These will be used to mail your ID card and send information about benefits.
- You’ll receive a new ID card in the mail within 10 days of your enrollment date. Your effective date of coverage is your program start date. Check PlanSource for your program start date if needed.
UC Irvine

Flexible Spending Account Enrollment for All UC Campuses
New residents and fellows have 30 days from their program start date to enroll in a flexible spending account (FSA). Once you are set up in the UCPath payroll system:
- Visit UCPath and select Benefit Enrollment.
- Select the Open button to make your FSA election. Note: It may take a few seconds for you to see the FSA options.
- Be sure to complete the online enrollment from start to finish. Once you fully complete the process, you will receive a confirmation statement from UCPath confirming your FSA enrollment.
NOTE: If you don’t fully complete the enrollment and receive a confirmation statement from UCPath that confirms your FSA election, you are not enrolled in the FSA and may need to wait until the next Open Enrollment in November to participate.
