University of California Health and Insurance Coverage for Residents and Fellows

2025–2026 Open Enrollment

What to know

It’s benefits enrollment season! As a current resident or fellow, you can make changes to your benefits during Open Enrollment, which takes place May 1–23. Changes to your benefits elections are effective July 1.

Your top to-do’s

  1. Enroll in medical, dental, vision and behavioral health coverage through PlanSource, except for UC Irvine residents and fellows, who should follow the instructions provided by your program coordinator.
    • You were automatically enrolled in life, accidental death and dismemberment (AD&D), and short-term and long-term disability insurance as a new resident or fellow. You do not need to take any further action.

If you do not enroll in benefits by May 23, you will not be able to enroll again until the next Open Enrollment period. The only exception is if you have a qualifying life event, such as having or adopting a child or getting married.

For more detailed instructions, visit the How to enroll page. To learn even more about your benefits, view the 2025 benefits brochure.

New resident or fellow?

If you are a new resident or fellow, you have 30 days from your program start date to enroll in medical, dental and vision coverage and in the flexible spending accounts. Your coverage begins retroactively to your program start date. Learn about all the benefits available to you, and check out the New residents and fellows page for your specific to-do list.
